Chart 18446 Lab Exercise – Crew Class–Part 1

18446-West-Point-ThumbChart familiarization Lab Exercise done by the sailing crew class in the Fall of 2011.  This has examples of common questions encountered by small boat operators.  The Exercise was worked as a group effort by the students at each table.

The students used the compass rose for direction, found water depths and light characteristics.

Crew Class Chart 18446 Lab Exercise

1)  How wide is the Northbound VTS Lane?

2)  What is the total width of the VTS lanes (North and South)?

3)  What is the bearing and distance from the West Point G “1” Fl G 4s to the Meadow Point G ‘1” Fl 4s?  True and Magnetic.  Which course would you give to the helm?

4)  What is the Approximate water depth in the Disposal Area?

5)  What is the unseen hazard off Meadow Point?

6)  What is the characteristics of the lower Range Marker Light going into the Ballard Locks?

7)  What is the distance and Magnetic Heading from the light on the north end of the Shilshole Marina Breakwater to the Meadow Point Buoy?

Crew Class Chart 18446 Lab Exercise Answers

1)  How wide is the Northbound VTS Lane?

1,000 Yards / ½ nm (Nautical Mile)

2)  What is the total width of the VTS lanes (North and South)?

2,500 yards / 1.25 nm

3)  What is the bearing and distance from the West Point G “1” Fl G 4s to the Meadow Point G ‘1” Fl 4s?

032T (True) / 014M (Magnetic)  2.52 nm

Compass would be given to the helm (Magnetic corrected for the Deviation of     the boat.

4)  What is the Approximate water depth in the Disposal Area?

229 to 241 Feet

5)  What is the unseen hazard off Meadow Point?

Submerged Piles

6)  What is the characteristics of the lower Range Marker Light going into the Ballard Locks?

Q R 20ft – Quick Red (Flashing over 60 flashes a minute) 20 Feet above Mean Higher High Water

7)  What is the distance and Magnetic Heading from the light on the north end of the Shilshole Marina Breakwater to the Meadow Point Buoy?

1,100 yards / 0.55 nm at 321M
