Navigation Exercise 2

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

NAVIGATION EXERCISE # 2

This is a basic Navigation exercise but the problems are typical of those seen by a recreational boater.  The questions are “Bite Sized” and except for one question, each question stands alone from the others.

This exercise was done on Small Boat Chart 18445 Page A.  The area used is just South of West Point on the south end  and Whidby Island  on the North.  If you have this chart or a similar chart that covers this area you may work the problems on it.  If you do not have a suitable chart there is a PDF Chartlet  of the area that can be printed out on 11 x 17 paper.  Many office supply stores and copy centers can print 11 x 17 if you don’t have a large printer.  You may also tile the printing to print onto two letter sized pages then tape them together, a bit crude but it does work.

The answers are at the bottom, there is also a PDF Chartlet showing the answers.  The questions and answers are also available in a formatted for printing PDF file at the bottom.

Thanks for your interest in Boating Safety and good luck with the exercise.

Weight / Exercise Record Sheets

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I use these sheets to record my daily exercise and weight loss attempts.

They can be used to record almost any type of activity where you want a record that can be seen over several months.

For weight loss DON’T record weight daily, you will have too many data points and it will be very confusing.  I record my weight on Wednesday and Saturday.  When I started and then restarted I weighed daily for 10 to 14 days to see what my normal weight  range was.

Weight record sheet January to June 2010 (pdf)

Weight record sheet July to December 2010 (pdf)

Print on odd light colored paper so the sheets don’t get lost as easily.  I use 65 lb. Cover Stock

CPAP / APAP / Auto A-Flex Record Sheet – For those with Sleep Apnea some newer CPAP machines adjust the pressure during the night and provide a record of events, pressures, blower time etc.  This sheet was designed to keep track of the machine / patient history, this allows a person to record and watch how effective the treatment is.  The sheets match a REMstar Auto A-Flex data readout.

How to get to the Shilshole Marina

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Shilshole Marina is on Puget Sound, west of Scenic Downtown Ballard and the Ballard Locks.

Mapquest Map of the Shilshole Marina Area. Golden Gardens Park is at the far north end of the marina, Ray’s Restaurant is about 400 yards south of the marina.   (Zoom out a bit to see the approaches using NW 85th & NW Market Street)  (See below for more detailed driving instructions and routing hints.)

Parking: There is plenty of parking in the marina lot. The marina is about 3/4 of a mile long so try and park close to the dock you are sailing from. You may Park in the main parking lot or along the street. Do not park in a spot that says “Parking Permits Required” – you will be towed.  “A” dock is at the south end of the marina “X” dock at the north end.  General parking starts at the north end of the boat yard and continues all the way to the north end by the dry boat storage and drive in.

Rest Rooms: There are unlocked rest rooms at the far north end of the marina behind the drive in, the main building in the center of the marina, and at the far south end by the boat yard (these are a bit hidden but are one the east side of the boat yard office building.

Where to dispose of old flares in Seattle

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Boaters in the Seattle area now have a safe and legal way to dispose of old safety flares. The what do I do with old flares is a recurring problem for boaters as safety flares expire 42 months from Date of Manufacture (check the expiration date when purchasing flares and every spring when you start your boating season).

Lighting flares for a non-distress reason on Federally Regulated waters is a Federal Crime. Offenders can and have gone to jail, been fined and required to pay for the cost of responding to the false mayday.

The flare collection sites are:

Elliott Bay Marina
Fisherman’s Terminal
Shilshole Bay Marina
West Marine, Shilshole Bay
Western Fire & Safety, Ballard
Seattle Police Harbor Base (North Lake Union, west of Gas Works Park)
West Marine, Edmonds

The Seattle flare disposal program was started in 1999 by Mr. Al Jensen, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary member of Flotilla 12, Edmonds Washington. Al started the program after finding out that District 13 Coast Guard (Pacific North West) was spending about $ 1.3 million dollars a year responding to false flare sightings. Al collected and disposed of 2,740 flares the first year and in 2000 he received a Superior Professional Achievement Award from District 13 for saving the district almost $700,000 in reduced false flare sightings. As of spring 2009, Al had collected and safely disposed of about 20,000 flares.
